The global pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of mortgage & most real estate workflows. You can think about buying property and immediately start looking at available homes in any location via a mobile device. You don’t know how much you can afford to spend or qualify for in the form of a mortgage, so you link up with an online mortgage platform, input your details, and gain a semi-immediate understanding of what you would actually qualify for. …

Over the past 5 years or so, I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to give advice to many entrepreneurs based off of my experience and learnings in building a business. Prior to late 2018, I was not investing but I was still introduced to some incredible entrepreneurs who were in need of guidance of some kind based on whatever stage they were in & what they were tackling at the time. The advice ranged from fundraising, product & tech development, organizational items, sales, and just about anything that comes up when trying to build a technology based startup.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a piece on anything! I decided that over this past birthday weekend of mine I would get back to writing and sharing my learnings with the world in hopes that they are useful to even just one person. A recent conversation with an entrepreneur from my alma mater who benefitted from my 3+ year old blogs was the tipping point in diving back in!

Since I last wrote in 2017— Fam, my former company, was acquired by Draftkings in 2018, my friend & I started an angel investment fund, and after spending time…

No one really seems to talk about it or acknowledge it, but iMessage is where a lot of mobile usage is trending towards, particularly for Gen-Z, and there are many good reasons why.

Let me preface this piece with three important points, a) the qualitative / quantitative observations I’m talking about here are with direct regard to US based teens / Gen-Z, not international, b) full disclosure that our main product, Fam, is currently premised on the iMessage platform. By no means do I intend to be biased in anything I say with regard to iMessage (hard to believe, but…

Imagine spending $250M-$350M so that your mobile app could provide a comprehensive way to help users stalk where their friends are at and what they may be doing. Well not too long ago, Snap Inc. did.

For those of you who aren’t too familiar with Snap’s latest feature, it’s pretty simple. You pinch your Snap camera screen with your thumb and index finger and it activates the map. You then select whether you want to be visible to all your friends, a custom group of friends, or to no one (ghost mode). …

Imagine being in a group chat with teenagers all day? Sounds crazy, right?

One of the best gateways to valuable insight for any company’s marketing and product strategy is understanding the end user or customer. The more you understand how your users think and make certain decisions, the better informed your macro and micro decisions will be. Here at Fam, we live by this philosophy, quite literally.

For over three years now my co-founder, Franco Iudiciani, and I, have “lived” in various teen- based group chats, some of which have been active for well over a year now, and it’s…

Over the past year or so, our company has taken a ride on every possible rollercoaster you can think of — from reorganizing our team and iterating on new products to being in the red with cash/liabilities and raising a round of funding in the two weeks leading up to the holidays. As with every startup story you’ve ever heard, just when you think it’s getting easy, it gets harder than you would ever think.

Having raised about $4 million in three rounds of financing from angel and VC…

“Humans aren’t as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were ‘reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy.” — Neil deGrasse Tyson

I had a great deal of confidence and enthusiasm coming out of college — I had a big work ethic, a multitude of ideas, and I was…

One thing that has struck me as interesting for quite some time, and especially over the last several months, is the hesitation that exists within us all to reveal uncomfortable information. Whether it has to do with an everyday company decision or a compounding, lingering strategic issue, leaders often refrain from shining a bright light on challenges when communicating with investors.

Clearly, the objective is to either preserve “character” or delay reality. However, shying away from a problem ultimately destroys both.

Facing challenges head on is by no means…

Surround yourself with people smarter than you, and constantly take the uncomfortable route

It’s been some time since I wrote on a particular topic, and this is partially due to the fact that the past several months have been a roller coaster ride (literally), and partially due to just not giving myself enough self-reflection time.

As you all know, I’ve been absolutely obsessed with working on my startup, SmackHigh, for quite some time now. …
